So a lot of people on this site love to read, so I was thinking it would be fun to have a book recommendation section. Just fill out this form with your book recommendation.
Book Title or Series Title:
Author:
Genre:
General Premise:
What you like about book:
What you don't like about book:
Warnings:
'Warnings' should be things that people should know before reading like, 'explicit and disgusting scene between the pig and the mermaid' or 'some fairly foul language from the ballerina pirate character' or 'half the book is in Swahili, so you might not understand it,' or 'Absolutely everyone dies violently.'
Here's MY current recommendation.
Book Title or Series Title: The Discworld Series (my favourite Discworld book is "Thief of Time."
Author: Terry Pratchett
Genre: Fantasy spoof.
General Premise: It's a series of books about a flat planet much like ours (though we don't have gnomes and trolls and werewolves and vampires and stuff) that basically embodies most fantasy cliches (with a twist) and facets of today's society, like rock music, the postal system, Broadway musicals, journalism, the military, fashion, etc.
What you like about book: Well, they're hilarious, but they also have really intriguing plots and awesomely quirky characters.
My favourite characters are Jeremy Clockson (obsessed with clockmaking and 'stark raving sane,' meaning that he's so sane that it's creepy-- only appears in one book), Death (the Grim Reaper; not such a bad fellow once you get to know him), Susan Sto Helit (Death's granddaughter and a second-grade teacher), Agnes Nitt (a witch who happens to be a fabulous singer and her alter-ego Perdita X, who hangs around in her brain making snide comments), and Vlad (a vampire who is madly in love with Agnes because she can resist him; he likes garlic.)
I'm also quite fond of Nobby Nobbs (he's got a card to prove he's human because no one believes him, based on how ugly he is; still, he gets the babes), Carrot Ironfoundersson (a ridiculously innocent six-foot-six-inch dwarf... he's adopted) and his girlfriend Angua (a vegetarian werewolf). All three of these characters are cops. Oh yeah, and there's the librarian. He's an orangutan. And Hodgesaaaargh, the falconer, whose real name is Hodges but his falcons are always diving on his head, causing him to say, "Hello, my name is HodgesAAAAAARGH!"
There are lots of mini-series-es-es in the main series: the one about Rincewind the Wizzard with Two Z's (don't like those much), the one about the Lancre Witches (that's the one with Agnes and Perdita X Nitt), the one about Death and his family (possibly my favourite), the one about the Night Watch (all the ones with the cops... these are the majority of the series), and... the other ones. My favourite book in the series is "Thief of Time," which is about Jeremy Clockson, Susan Sto Helit, Death, and the Auditors.
The author uses a lot of puns and wordplay in the writing, which is very funny, and makes a lot of spoofs and in-jokes. Most of the jokes really work, even if they sound silly when I try to describe them here... like the characters really are great characters, no matter how eccentric they are and how insane they sound when I describe them.
What you don't like about book: A lot of the books try to pack too many subplots into the books, which can make them manic and confusing.
Warnings: There are like 33 books in this series, so if you get hooked, you won't be able to stop. You can usually start at any book in the series, though. Also some of the books have some double-entendres and innuendos and stuff... nothing explicit. Nanny Ogg (an old witch character) likes making wink-wink, nudge-nudge jokes, and there's a subplot in "Maskerade" about an aphrodisiac cookbook called "The Joye of Snacks" written by Nanny Ogg.
