The shadow writhed and thrashed, its surface turbulent as a billion microscopic threads of darkness shot off in all directions, racing along the connections between everything around it. Distance was no matter, nor was size, because the moment the shadow wanted to go somewhere, it was there. Tendrils twisted across Coruscant, into nearby stars, and far beyond, to every child playing a game of dejarik, every official working out a business transaction, and every grazing bantha herd. Then, they shot back to their source, the heart of the darkness, the shadow, then out, then in, again and again. Some of the shoots of dark power didn’t return, but swerved and clenched and did as the shadow willed; some never left the shadow’s side. The shadow wasn’t even paying attention. The ebb and flow of the darkness was as natural as its heartbeat. This was Darth Umbra, Dark Lord of the Sith, seen through the Force. Without it, she was considerably less impressive. A thin Zabrak girl, not much older than 19, pale skinned, dark-haired, with uncannily innocent brown eyes. She had no tattoos, Sith or Zabrak, for they would make her too easy to identify. Seven spikes formed something of a crown on the front of her forehead, just before the hairline. Umbra was leaning against a tree in one of the last wildernesses of Coruscant, idly guiding the falling leaves into a complex pattern around her. She was waiting for contact from her master, and starting to get impatient. Actually, that was wrong. She’d been impatient for the last standard hour, but she’d been feeding the frustration into the leaf pattern, which was why she looked perfectly calm and untroubled. The moment she heard the buzz from her comlink on the ground next to her, the Sith Lord channeled the last of her impatience into making the next set of leaves fall to the ground as powdered ashes, and activated the comlink with her mind. Instantly, the translucent blue image of Darth Sidious rose out of the device. Umbra snapped to attention. “Lord Umbra,” her master said. It wasn’t a question. “Master?” By all rights, she should have been Lady Umbra, but she’d decided before the Clone Wars ever began that a Lady of the Sith sounded like somebody who would cook and clean for a Lord of the Sith, and that certainly wasn’t in her plans. “We have a problem, my apprentice, with Senator Conti. I feel he is too, shall we say, argumentative for a politician of his standing.” Umbra smiled. “Of course, my Master.” Her mood rose significantly, which was probably good news for the falling leaves. Finally a legitimate assignment. There’d been next to nothing in the weeks since Dooku’s death. Umbra had been left to sit around and train 24 hours a day. An assassination might even be something of a challenge. Before a second was up, however, her mood plummeted again, one of her hearts seeming to drop to the level of the other. Her killing of Zahc Conti would lead to possible connections between Palpatine and Sidious. That was out of the question. She would have to hire somebody else. The sizzle of disintegrating leaves shadowed her reply. “I understand. I’ll take care of it. Is that all?” “I’m going to see about Skywalker being appointed to the Jedi Council. Report back when Conti is removed.” The image fizzled out. The Zabrak had to stop herself from scattering the comlink into a billion pieces. Mention of Anakin Skywalker curdled her already sour mood. Through her life, Darth Umbra had been the alternate apprentice. At first for Maul. After he was killed on Naboo, Umbra barely had time to get used to being the sole heir to the Sith legacy before Count Dooku entered the scene. Now, he was finally gone, but Lord Umbra didn’t doubt that the moment Anakin turned to the Dark Side, she’d be the next to join him. Perhaps it was time she did something about that… The girl filed the thought in the back of her mind. There were more important matters at hand. She picked up her comlink again and typed in a code. Audio only. “Vammool?” The answer came almost immediately, in the form of a feral roar. A translator droid converted the sentence into Galactic Basic, but Umbra only needed it for clarification. She’d learned Wookiee from a young age, and the Force helped her with anything she wasn’t sure of. “Lord Umbra! What can I do for you? Smugglers for the Federation, perhaps, or droid enhancements? Could I interest you in a shipment of glitterstim?” “Cut it out, Vam,” snapped Umbra. She could practically see the crime lord flinch at the casual name. Exactly the effect she was going for. Ordinarily, she would have been more considerate, since the wookiee was one of the closest things she had to a friend, but today, she’d had to restrain herself from snapping at Palpatine himself. She had to take out her bad mood on somebody. “I need hitmen. Your best. The kind who don’t ask questions. We’ve been getting some trouble from the Zeltron senator. We need him kidnapped, then disposed of. Your agents should be told it’s a ransom mission.” “Alright,” the translator droid said in an electronic monotone. “First priority, Lord. I’ll put my best agents on it.” The comlink switched off.
((The writing style does, in fact, resemble Matthew Stover's. It isn't intentional, but there's not much I can do about it now. Frik, the next section is yours.))

This is really good. I know next to nothing about Star Wars, but I still was able to follow it! Which is an accomplishment... love the names, by the way. Although Umbra still makes me think of Umbridge, which is unfortunate.

right, working on it. and if we hadn't told what was going to happen to everyone, nobody owuld have had any say, everyone would have hated us for the remainder of eternity, and you would never have been able to argue it out and get over it before we wrote it. so...ya.

precisely. but if someone wanted a different profession, we had it all up there so that anyone who actaully cared could beg us. the only reason you didn't get your way was because we had way too many characters to give them all wildly intricate pasts, and besides, it didn't fit the timeline. we got him as close as the plot would allow.

and if we'd just gone ahead and made the character any way we wanted, you wouldn't have had any problem with that, is that basically what your saying? besides, the character we did end up making for you was roughly based on the one you originally made up, so he's more bad@ss.

Tay, people. I have to leave for the writing thing early tomorrow, so when I get back (in two weeks) I expect Frik to have posted her bit. *glares*
I'll try to get on here at least once during that time. Frik, do you still have that PM with the order of the scenes in the first chapter? If you'd post it here, that would be nice.
Yeah.
