Hello Kane!
I am reading It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, first published in 1935. It is something of a political horror novel that highlights the dangers of fascism by presenting this disturbing scenario: the United States as a fascist dictatorship.
Much of the book's message is obvious from the sarcastic title - though I am not that far into the book, it already clearly shows how even of country like the USA can shift to totalitarianism, all in the name of patriotism and national security.
Though there is no longer a Nazi Germany to draw parallels to like when this book was written, this story is still very relevant today, serving as one writer's warning of a government that goes too far.

I am still reading The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which I think is really weird because I started it in early June. I've been reading about a chapter a week, instead of five chapters a day or whatever my average is. Wow, I really need to get going on that.

I love A Wrinkle in Time!
I just finished You Can't Take It With You and The Man Who Came to Dinner, both plays.

Oh em gee! I was in "You Can't TAke It With You," and I was playing Gay Wellington! It's not a very big part in the script, but it was a big part in the show-- I lay on the table for all of act two, acting incredibly drunk and rather inappropriate, twitching and making strange sounds periodically and contorting my legs into the strangest of positions. Also, when I was supposed to sing, "There was a young lady from Wheeling," I sang "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" and did a bit of a strip tease. It was a GREAT PLAY! And Kane and Luna and Wickedgrl played G-men!

Oh, my gosh, that's great! I love that play! So does McJane, which isn't surprising.

Have you read Babbitt, Tim?
Not a classic, but I'm rereading Men at Arms. Amazingly, when I looked up quotes from it, I found out that Vetinari is described as looking "from the back...like a carnivorous flamingo." I missed that.

I REMEMBER THAT QUOTE. I absolutely love "Men At Arms." When I finished that book, I just went and started it again from the beginning!

I am rereading The Fifth Elephant, but the library copy stinks of smoke.
And I just noticed that through a slight typo, the title of the thread implies that superlative books have been reading...
